Luigi Mangione, the Maryland Ivy League graduate charged with assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has retained Craig Rothfeld, a high-profile prison consultant known for advising disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Rothfeld, a former finance professional who served time for investment and tax fraud, specializes in guiding defendants through legal and incarceration processes.
Rothfeld’s consulting firm, Inside Outside Ltd, confirmed his involvement with Mangione’s defense but declined further comment. The firm, which assists white-collar defendants from indictment to sentencing, also collaborates with legal teams on court filings and letters of support.
Mangione faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, stalking murder, and firearm-related offenses. Authorities allege Mangione meticulously planned a cross-country trip culminating in the December 4 assassination-style shooting of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel hosting a UnitedHealthcare investor conference. After fleeing New York City, Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where police recovered the alleged murder weapon—a firearm with a 3D-printed receiver and suppressor—and a forged ID.
Thompson, a Minnesota resident, was in New York City for the investor event. His killing has drawn significant media attention, with Mangione now held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Rothfeld, previously convicted of defrauding investors and falsifying business records, served a sentence of 1 ½ to 4 ½ years before transitioning into prison consulting. His clientele includes high-profile defendants such as Weinstein, who remains incarcerated following convictions for sex crimes in Los Angeles and pending trials in New York and London.
Mangione’s legal team has yet to comment on Rothfeld’s involvement or the upcoming defense strategy.
