Whitmer to ‘Find Common Ground’ with Trump

Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) suggested she is willing to work with President-elect Donald Trump for the betterment of the state’s residents.

“People in Michigan, like a majority of Americans, voted for Donald Trump, and my oath is to Michigan,” Whitmer told CNN. “Obviously, I’ve got experience in this type of environment that will help inform how I continue to fight for Michigan. But I know Donald Trump cares about Michigan. And I’m hoping that because of that, we’ll be able to find some common ground in some important ways.”

Last month, Whitmer indicated she may work with Trump, telling reporters that she aims to focus on shared priorities.

“Obviously, there will be areas in which we don’t agree. I don’t agree with anyone on everything. And so that’s not going to be a surprise,” she explained. But you know, we have worked with the Trump administration before. We’ll figure out how to work with the Trump administration, going into this last two years of my term,

Republicans won the Michigan House in November. “Our hard-fought victory reaffirms that the people of Michigan want leaders who put them first, uphold the rule of law, and advocate for accountability at every level of government,” said House Republican Leader Matt Hall, who will become the state’s next House Speaker.

Following the November 5 election, Whitmer said, “My big takeaway is this is still Michigan. We are still a nation that is very divided and I’ve got to do everything I can to … stake out an agenda where every person sees that they are valued and has an opportunity here.”
