Paraguay Opens Embassy in Jerusalem, Strengthening Israel Ties

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña officially opened his country’s embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, demonstrating strong support for Israel during a time of conflict and international scrutiny. Peña, joined by a delegation, was welcomed by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, marking Paraguay’s inclusion in a select group of nations recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Paraguay now joins the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, and Papua New Guinea in relocating its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, following the U.S. lead under President Donald Trump in 2018. At the ceremony, Herzog thanked Peña for standing with Israel during what he called one of the nation’s most challenging periods. He praised Paraguay’s solidarity and its commitment to fighting antisemitism and other forms of hatred, calling the embassy opening a symbol of enduring friendship.

President Peña described the move as a moral obligation on behalf of Paraguay’s six million citizens. He emphasized that the embassy relocation reflects Paraguayan values and faith in a brighter future for both nations. Peña said the decision is being closely followed by his people, underscoring its importance as a historic moment for Paraguay.

The embassy inauguration comes amid heightened regional tensions. Israeli military operations continue in Syria, targeting weapons stockpiles to prevent them from falling into terrorist hands. Israel has reiterated its commitment to blocking Iranian influence in the region and preventing the rearming of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This diplomatic step by Paraguay strengthens bilateral relations with Israel while highlighting shared values and mutual support. In a region marked by conflict, the embassy relocation serves as a symbolic and strategic affirmation of Paraguay’s alliance with Israel.
