The Washington Post published a piece offering advice on how an American can leave the United States amidst President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.
The article described that Expatsi, a company that helps Americans moving abroad, saw a surge in traffic hours after the presidential election. Jen Barnett, the company’s founder, told the WaPo that Expatsi experienced “a couple month’s worth of sales” in a few days.
Several of the countries listed in the article that Americans may consider immigrating to include Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Ireland.
The WaPo broke down each country’s climate, politics, health care, and immigration policies.
While the outlet explained that many of the countries have “center-left” governments, the article noted that New Zealand has “turned to the right and is now led by its most conservative government in decades, with many gun control initiatives and environmental protections being reversed.”
Following the election, the number of times people in the United States searched “how to move to Canada” increased by 400%. Most of the searches came from those in Vermont, Maine, Oregon, New Hampshire, and Minnesota.
Related searches included “how to immigrate to Canada” and “relocation.”
Lawyers told Fortune that many of their clients have begun making preparations to leave the United States.
Immigration attorney Reaz Jafri at international law firm Withers and CEO of advisory firm Dasein said, “We saw a spike in 2017 after Trump won, and then again in 2020 due to concerns about a Democrat winning and the potential for higher taxes on income, capital gains and a wealth tax, the contested election, and the January 6 riots.”
Sarah Nicklin, head of public relations at global citizen firm Henley & Partners, said the firm expects U.S. client applications to “go into overdrive.”
