The hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” declared that “woke is broke,” drawing attention to the failures of identity politics.
Hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough read a column by The New York Times‘ Maureen Dowd, titled “Democrats and the Case of Mistaken Identity Politics,” and stated that “Democrats are waking up and realizing that woke is broke.”
Dowd wrote in the column that the Democratic Party “embraced a worldview of hyper-political correctness, condescension and cancellation, and it supported diversity statements for job applicants and faculty lounge terminology like ‘Latinx,’ and ‘BIPOC’ (Black, Indigenous, People of Color),” a move that “alienated half the country, or more.”
Citing data from The Finacial Times, the columnist explained that “white progressives hold views far to the left of the minorities they champion.”
“White progressives think at higher rates than Hispanic and Black Americans that ‘racism is built into our society,’ Dowd wrote. “Many more Black and Hispanic Americans surveyed, compared with white progressives, responded that ‘America is the greatest country in the world.'”
Scarborough acknowledged the reality of the column, saying to Reverend Al Sharpton, “This is what we’ve known since 2017, what you and I have talked about, that white elitists that run the Democratic Party are far to the left of many Black and Hispanic voters in the Democratic Party.”
“It was true in ’17, and it was doubly true in 2024 that these white progressives on the far, far left said, We’re going to save you, Black and Hispanic people of America,'” he added.
“A lot of Black and Hispanic people of America said, No thanks. You’re kind of wild. You’re too far left. We believe in the American dream. We want to be part of the American dream,” Scarborough continued. “Thanks, but no thanks. Keep that in your college classes.”
