Third-party groups submitted 90,000 voter registration forms in Maricopa County, according to a report from AZ Central.
The tens of thousands of forms were dropped off on the last day of voter registration.
Thousands of the forms are damaged and cannot be used, the report said, explaining that voters who “didn’t completely fill out their registration form or who filled out a form that ended up damaged may have to cast a provisional ballot on Election Day.” While about 50,000 of the forms have been processed, up to 40,000 are unusable.
Some of the forms that were submitted to the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office were registered under names such as “Donald Duck” and “Mickey Mouse,” clearly fraudulent.
“While we appreciate the work that these third-party organizations do, we hope that in the future they will seek to work with the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office’s deputy registrar program to learn the proper way to fill out these forms to ensure each voter is registered within the letter of the law,” Recorder’s Office spokesperson Taylor Kinnerup said.
Kinnerup added that the office has done everything it can to process the “unprecedented” number of registration forms. “All of the preliminary work has been done in terms of processing these forms,” the spokesperson said. “Anything left to do is on the onus of the voter.”
In June, a man was arrested after allegedly stealing a security fob and keys for the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center (MCTEC), prompting election workers to reprogram the tabulators.
“The security fobs are used in conjunction with special secure tablets during the election,” Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detectives said in court documents. “A director at the facility stated that the estimated cost of the reprogramming would be greater than $19,000 dollars, and the secure operation of the facility is greatly impeded until the reprogramming is complete.”
