U.S. citizens in Wisconsin who do not already have a photo ID can apply for a temporary ID card to vote, Just the News reported.
“U.S. citizens can easily get a free ID for voting, even if not all documentation is available!” the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website reads.
If one does not have identification documents, they will fill out two information forms to receive a photo ID for voting. According to one of the forms, an individual must surrender their unexpired Wisconsin driver’s license to obtain a state ID card.
The DMV then uses the information on the form to verify the individual’s identity.
Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI) wrote on social media that “WI law prohibits individuals from voting if they are temporary residents. In response to a letter I sent, @WI_Elections provided draft guidance that Limited Term and Non-Domiciled ID cards cannot be used as proof of residence.”
Steil wrote in an October 24 letter to the Wisconsin Elections Commission that “Limited Term” and “Non-Domiciled ID cards” are not valid IDs for voting, as such identifications are for “individuals who are temporary visitors.”
“As such, it would appear contrary to Wisconsin law for these IDs to serve as valid proof of residency to register to vote in Wisconsin. The point of these IDs is to show that the individual does not have the necessary intent to reside in the State and is only present for temporary purposes,” Steil wrote. “Moreover, if Wisconsin were to allow these IDs to serve as valid proof of residency, it would risk allowing a voter to vote in more than one State.”
The Wisconsin Elections Commission said in an October 28 response letter that those who possess the temporary ID cards are “most likely ineligible to vote because they are not a citizen and the election inspector should challenge that individual’s eligibility to vote.”
