Majority of Americans Want Proof of Citizenship to Vote

A new Gallup poll shows that the majority of Americans support election integrity efforts such as photo identification and proof of citizenship. The poll marks the first time Gallup asked respondents about citizenship requirements.

According to the poll, 84% of American adults support voter ID, up from 80% in the 2016 election. 83% of American adults also support providing proof of citizenship.

Interestingly, the majority of both Republicans and Democrats support the measures. The matter of providing proof of citizenship is supported by 96% of Republicans polled and 66% of Democrats. Providing photo ID is supported by 98% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats.

Only 16% of Democrats support “removing people from voter registration lists if they don’t vote in any elections over a five-year period,” Gallup adds. The same prompt was favored by 51% of Republicans.

“Majorities of Americans favor a range of election law policies that expand voters’ access to the ballot box, including early voting, automatic voter registration and sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters,” the Gallup survey explains. “They also broadly support measures to limit fraud and ensure election integrity, including requiring photo identification to vote and providing proof of citizenship when first registering to vote.”

Earlier this year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill requiring proof of citizenship for participation in federal elections. The bill, Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, was condemned by the Biden administration.
