Vice President Kamala Harris suggested during an interview with NBC News that she would reject religious exemptions for abortions.
Hallie Jackson asked Harris if she would consider religious exemptions for abortions to appeal to a Republican-controlled Congress, to which the vice president said, “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we’re talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.”
“To Republicans like, for example, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, who would back something like this on a Democratic agenda, if, in fact, Republicans control Congress, would you offer them an olive branch, or is that off the table, is that not an option for you?” Jackson asked.
“I’m not going to engage in hypotheticals because we could go with a variety of scenarios. Let’s just start with the fundamental fact,” Harris stated. “A basic freedom has been taken from the women of America: the freedom to make decisions about their own body. And that cannot be negotiable, which is that we need to put back in the protections of Roe v. Wade, and that is it.”
As Jackson pressed for a discussion on the matter, Harris said, “I’m not going to go down that rabbit hole with you right now.”
Pro-life organizations widely condemned the comments.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America wrote on X, “Kamala Harris promises ‘freedom’ but then pledges to federally steamroll Americans into taking part in abortions against their will,” adding, “Docs must perform them, taxpayers must pay for them, for any reason, in all 50 states, no exceptions.”
Chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition Ralph Reed wrote, “So she’s not only pro-abortion, she is anti-religious freedom. Duly noted.”
“Why would any Christian vote for her?” CatholicVote asked.
A similar reaction was had by the Trump War Room X account, which said, “Christians, remember this when you go to vote.”
