Ohio’s Tim Ryan Calls for Biden to Resign, Endorses Harris for Democratic Nominee

One of the first prominent Democrats to demand that President Joe Biden resign in the wake of his dismal showing in last week’s debate is Tim Ryan, a former congressman from Ohio and Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate.

Ryan stated unequivocally in an opinion piece that Newsweek published on Monday night that he thinks Biden ought to step aside and give Vice President Kamala Harris the nomination.

“I ran for President in 2020. I was the first Presidential candidate to endorse Joe Biden in 2020. I love America. I love our Party. I love Joe Biden. The Democratic Nominee in 2024 should be Kamala Harris,” Ryan wrote.

“We have to rip the bandaid off!” he said in his opinion piece, which he posted on X, the former name of Twitter. There’s too much on the line. ⁦@VP⁩ has matured considerably in her role; she will demolish Trump in a debate, draw attention to the problem of choice, energise our supporters, win back the youth vote, and usher in a generational shift. Now is the moment!

On the 2022 campaign trail, Ryan became well-known and loved among Democrats, who thought he had figured out how to relate to middle-class Americans in a state like Ohio, which Trump had decisively won. Ryan solidified his position as a rising star in the party even though Republican JD Vance won the contest by a margin of more than six points.

Ryan referred to Biden’s performance in the debate as “deeply troubling.” He maintained that Biden’s resignation is necessary and that it goes beyond “just a 90-minute debate and a terrible performance.” Generational transformation is a crucial issue for this election, as I have been advocating for over a year.

Ryan claimed that Harris may embody the transformation that Democrats need to see, refuting his earlier argument that Biden shouldn’t run in 2024. In particular, on the abortion issue, which will be a crucial one in the fall, Vice President Harris could deliver a far more compelling Democratic argument than President Biden, the author concluded.
