Elderly, Disabled Woman Facing Eviction After Sharing Gospel Tracts

A woman living in a senior center is facing eviction after she shared Gospel tracts in a common area.

The woman, Jocelyn Harris, is legally blind, uses a scooter, and is on dialysis for kidney treatments.

Harris’ landlord, Lindy Property Management Company, called the tracts “garbage” and appeared hostile to the woman’s faith.

The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) is taking action on the matter.

ACLJ recently sent a letter on behalf of the woman. According to the legal group, the woman was “forbidden from placing Bible tracts on a community table because building management wanted to be more “’inclusive.’”

The tracts “communicate her religious faith and invite people to visit her church,” ACLJ explained. “This common area consists of a community table where pamphlets, flyers, business cards, and other personal materials are regularly available for people to share.”

Following the letter, the property management company’s lawyer said Harris could freely distribute the tracts. Shortly thereafter, however, the woman received a 30-day eviction notice due to “supposed debt.”

“[B]ecause of our client’s situation and the benefits she receives, her payments are set up to be automatically received by the housing complex from her debit card account,” the legal group described, suggesting that the alleged debt is evidence of the company’s “intent to retaliate.”

The group is demanding that Harris’ “religious liberty rights be protected and that she be allowed to exercise the privileges that every member of the housing complex has and not be singled out for her religious faith.”
