A few legislators from Michigan wish to take tough measures against illegal immigration.
Recently, the Michigan House Freedom Caucus submitted a resolution and a bundle of five bills that aim to make it unlawful to do nothing about illegal immigration. The package was unveiled by state representatives Neil Friske, (R-Charlevoix) Steve Carra, (R-Three Rivers) Matt Maddock, (R-Milford) and James DeSana, (R-Ash Township.)
According to Carra, “we are currently disincentivizing legal immigration with bureaucratic complications and incentivizing illegal immigration with taxpayer-funded programs.” “Instead of opposing mass migration, we ought to embrace legal immigration by doing away with immigration caps and do away with taxpayer-funded incentives for illegal immigration.”
Although the plan is unlikely to pass in a state where the legislature is controlled by Democrats in both chambers, it might speak to national concerns. In February, a Gallup poll found that 28% of Americans ranked immigration as the most important national concern, ahead of the government (20%) and the economy (12%). Since 2019, this is the first time immigration has been at the top of the surveys.
