A study found that “transgender men,” or biological women, become postmenopausal after taking testosterone.
The study analyzed “transgender men” over the age of 18 who were involved in hormone therapy.
Biological women taking testosterone were discovered to have developed pelvic floor dysfunction (94%).
“Transgender men on hormone therapy have a high incidence of PFD (94.1%) and experience a greater occurrence of urinary symptoms (86.7%),” the study concluded.
According to The Telegraph, the average age of those in the study was 28.
Participants who were “as young as 18 and had an average age of 28, had bladder and bowel symptoms that medics would expect to see in a woman after the menopause,” the outlet reported.
Elaine Miller, a pelvic health physiotherapist and member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, told the outlet, “A lot of women are absolutely fine until the menopause and then they start to get leaky. That appears to be exactly the same trajectory for female people who take cross-sex hormones, but there hasn’t been much in the way of research.”
She added that she “would expect that almost 100 per cent of female people that take cross-sex hormones will end up with these problems.”
While transgender hormones are linked to health issues, those who undergo transgender surgery have an increased risk of committing suicide.
A study from the University of Texas Medical Branch found that the risk of suicide increased twelve times following gender-transition surgery compared to those who did not undergo transgender surgery.
The study sought to assess the risk of “suicide or self-harm associated with gender affirmation procedures,” as transgender individuals “face elevated depression rates, leading to an increase in suicide ideation and attempts.”
“Individuals who underwent gender-affirming surgery had a 12.12-fold higher suicide attempt risk than those who did not,” the researchers found.
