The U.S. Department of State is funding LGBT events for Pride Month overseas.
Taxpayer dollars are paying for the city of Brno’s Pride Week in the Czech Republic.
More than five thousand dollars will go to the organization of the city’s Pride Week, which includes “several activities aimed to promote awareness of the life of the LGBTQ+ community in the Czech Republic in the South Moravian region,” a description of the grant reads.
Some of the events during Brno’s Pride Week include reading children’s “rainbow” books, a pro-Pride church service, a queer youth picnic, a lecture on “queer family planning,” and a discussion on “Czech and Slovak Queer Art.”
The State Department is also funding Pride events in Bulgaria and Australia.
The Bulgarian grant of nearly $15,000 will support “Sofia Pride 2024 and LGBT rights as human rights through Bulgaria’s most popular and visited LGBT-related event,” spending records read.
Sofia Pride is the “largest human rights event in Bulgaria and a key to LGBTI+ visibility,” according to its website.
According to federal spending information, the Australian grant of $5,250 will allow the Equality Project to “host a better together LGBTIQA+ community conference on June 13-15, 2024 and will invite a U.S. speaker to participate in the conference.”
American Faith previously reported that the State Department funded a dance program to “uplift transgender and gender diverse” people in Peru.
“Ballroom Saves Lives: Resiliency and Wellness in Peru Ballroom” is a winner of the Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund (CDAF), a competition that focuses on “strengthening democratic institutions and fighting disinformation,” “protecting the environment,” “human rights, refugees, and migrants,” “building community through arts, sports, language, and technology,” and “fostering alumni network development.”
“Ballroom is a performance art style and culture consisting of dance, modeling, and community engagement that began in the Black and Latinx LGBTQIA+ community,” a description reads.
