Although the state of California was not permitted to consider race in admissions prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have infiltrated medical schools, according to a report from the Washington Free Beacon.
Race-based admissions have resulted in UCLA becoming a “failed medical school,” said one individual in the admissions department. “We want racial diversity so badly, we’re willing to cut corners to get it.”
Within three years of hiring Jennifer Lucero, the dean of admissions for UCLA’s School of Medicine, the medical school dropped from 6th to 18th place.
One professor told the Free Beacon that a student “could not identify a major artery when asked, then berated the professor for putting her on the spot.”
Another professor said they “don’t know how some of these students are going to be junior doctors,” adding, “Faculty are seeing a shocking decline in knowledge of medical students.”
An admissions officer blamed double standards on the failing medical school, sharing, “All the normal criteria for getting into medical school only apply to people of certain races.”
Two individuals told the outlet that during a February 2022 meeting, Lucero called for a qualified white male to be bumped down several spots because the school had “too many of his kind.” She instead advocated for a poorly performing Hispanic applicant to be moved up.
The information is significant as admissions officials rarely come forward to provide details into student considerations. Those who spoke to the Free Beacon agreed to do so because the “results of Lucero’s push for diversity have been so alarming,” the outlet said.
American Faith reported that UCLA’s medical school recently ended an exercise that segregated students.
UCLA required first-year students to take a class called “Structural Racism and Health Equity,” where students were split up by race in one exercise.
Students were directed to discuss “antiracist” prompts in a “White student caucus group,” the “Non-Black People of Color (NBPOC) student caucus group” or the “Black student caucus group.”
