The statue of George Washington at George Washington University has been covered in Palestinian flags.
A Palestinian keffiyeh also covers the statue’s face.
A sign displayed against the statue’s back reads, “Community Guidelines: No Zionism.”
“Do Not Lose Sight of Gaza,” it adds in large lettering.
Several members of the House Oversight Committee visited the statue, including Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) and Representatives Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), William Timmons (R-SC), Byron Donalds (R-FL) and Eric Burlison (R-MO).
Boebert attempted to take the flags down as protesters cried out.
“It is private property, and this is America, and this should come down,” she said.
“The only flag that should be flying at our universities is the American flag,” Boebert wrote on X. “End of discussion.”
