The document was allegedly central to Trump’s indictment.
QUICK FACTS:
- A key document in Trump’s indictment is no longer considered to be part of what Trump retained leading to his indictment.
- The document in question was inferred through leaked audio obtained by media outlets, where Trump was heard discussing a “confidential” memo pertaining to a plan to invade Iran.
- The alleged document is now not part of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) case against Trump, although the Iran discussion was at the center of the audio file from which the indictment came.
- Trump has maintained that he has “done nothing wrong,” as he noted while in New Hampshire, and says to have declassified records prior to leaving the White House.
- Trump also took to his social media platform Truth Social to call out the “deranged special prosecutor” working with the DOJ in the indictment.
- “The Deranged Special Prosecutor, Jack Smith, working in conjunction with the DOJ & FBI, illegally leaked and ‘spun’ a tape and transcript of me which is actually an exoneration, rather than what they would have you believe,” Trump posted. “This continuing Witch Hunt is another ELECTION INTERFERENCE Scam. They are cheaters and thugs.”
WHAT WAS SAID IN THE ‘IRAN’ CLIP:
- The audio clip from July 21, 2021, features a voice that is allegedly Trump’s saying, “Well with Milley – uh, let me see that, I’ll show you an example.”
- Papers can be heard rustling while the audio continues, “He said that I wanted to attack Iran.”
- “Isn’t it amazing? I have a big pile of papers, this thing just came up,” the voice adds. “Look. This was him. They presented me this—this is off the record, but—they presented me this. This was him. This was the defense department and him.”
- “This totally wins my case you know… except it is highly confidential, secret – this is secret information,” he says.
- Another voice can be heard laughing, before saying, “Hillary would print that out all the time…her emails,” to which Trump responds, “She’d send it, to Anthony Weiner… the pervert.”
- The voice allegedly belonging to Trump then says he cannot declassify the document because he is not president.
BACKGROUND:
- American Faith reported that a third of Republican voters are more likely to support Trump following his indictment.
- “Trump’s federal indictment hasn’t changed anything,” according to a poll from National Public Affairs (NPA).
- Instead, “nearly one-third of voters say the indictment makes them ‘more likely’ to support him as the nominee and 40% say it ‘doesn’t impact their decision.’”
