Yelp Becomes The Latest Company To Pay For Employees To Travel For Abortions

Yelp joins list of companies offering to pay for employees’ travel expenses to receive an abortion.

QUICK FACTS:
  • The decision comes after Republican states have made more pro-life laws banning abortions after a baby has developed a heartbeat inside the womb.
  • Yelp responded by claiming they will now cover the costs for any of its 4,000 employees who wish to travel out of state to get the procedure done.
  • “The ability to control your reproductive health, and whether or when you want to extend your family, is absolutely fundamental to being able to be successful in the workplace,” Miriam Warren, the company’s chief diversity officer said.
YELP CHIEF DIVERSITY OFFICER:

“We’ve long been a strong advocate for equality in the workplace, and believe that gender equality cannot be achieved if women’s healthcare rights are restricted.”

BACKGROUND:
  • Yelp publicly made the decision on the same day Republican Governor Kevin Stitt signed legislation that would make it a felony to perform an abortion in the state.
  • Bumble and Match Group followed Yelp’s move, as well as ride-share companies Lyft and Uber, The Blaze reported.
  • “The company generally does not take political stands unless it is relevant to our business,” CEO of Match Group Shar Dubey told her employees. “But in this instance, I personally, as a woman in Texas, could not keep silent.”
