The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced that it has sent letters to 60 universities for antisemitic discrimination.
Each of the universities is being investigated for Title VI violations, the Education Department said in a news release.
“The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year. University leaders must do better,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon. “U.S. colleges and universities benefit from enormous public investments funded by U.S. taxpayers. That support is a privilege and it is contingent on scrupulous adherence to federal antidiscrimination laws.”
The Trump administration launched antisemitism investigations into Columbia University, Northwestern University, Portland State University, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, last month. Craig Trainor, the department’s acting assistant secretary for civil rights, said at the time that “[t]oo many universities have tolerated widespread antisemitic harassment and the illegal encampments that paralyzed campus life last year, driving Jewish life and religious expression underground.”
The universities receiving letters include:
