Rand Paul Escalates Fauci’s Criminal Referral After DOJ Fails To Take Action

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has now sent his criminal referral of Dr. Anthony Fauci to U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves after the Department of Justice failed to take action.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has escalated his previous criminal referral of Anthony Fauci after the DOJ failed to respond or take any action.
  • “Because of the DOJ’s inaction regarding Fauci’s lies to congress, I’ve now sent a criminal referral to D.C. U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves. I’m demanding an investigation,” Paul said Tuesday.
  • “Dr. Fauci testified that ‘the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.’ In a subsequent hearing, I warned Dr. Fauci of the criminal implications of lying to Congress and offered him an opportunity to recant his previous statements,” Paul writes in the letter.
  • The senator said that while “Dr. Fauci denied funding gain-of-function research” publicly, in private he “acknowledges gain-of-function research at WIV to his colleagues.”
  • “A congressional hearing, however, is not the place for a public servant to play political games – especially when the health and well-being of American citizens is on the line,” Paul continued.
SENATOR RAND PAUL ON THE DOJ’S REFUSAL TO INVESTIGATE DR. ANTHONY FAUCI OVER LYING UNDER OATH:

“Since AG Garland doesn’t appear to want to do his job, I’ve today sent evidence for a criminal referral for Anthony Fauci to the US Attorney in DC,” Paul said.

BACKGROUND:
  • Last week, Paul sent an “official criminal referral” to the DOJ concerning testimony from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
  • Paul referred to an email from February 2020 in which Fauci detailed a call with British medical researcher Jeremy Farrar, who was director of the Wellcome Trust at the time.
  • According to Fauci, those on the task force call expressed concern about the “fact upon viewing the sequences of several isolates of the nCoV, there were mutations in the virus that would be most unusual to have evolved naturally in the bats and that there was a suspicion that this mutation was intentionally inserted.”
  • “The suspicion was heightened by the fact that scientists in Wuhan University are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection, and the outbreak originated in Wuhan,” the former NIAID director continued.
  • Paul claimed the email directly contradicted “everything he said in committee hearing,” when Fauci denied “that they funded any gain of function, and it’s absolutely a lie.”
  • In July 2021, Paul reminded Fauci that “lying to Congress is a federal crime,” suggesting that the doctor had lied about gain-of-function research conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China.
  • Fauci claimed he had “never lied before Congress” during prior testimony in May, telling Paul that “you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
